ALLERGY BABYCARE\HOW TO WEAN: HOW TO INTRODUCE A FOOD
Use the method outlined below to establish the baby on a solid diet which he or she tolerates when first weaning, and use it in future as the child grows up, whenever you introduce anything new that the baby or child has not eaten or swallowed before. Use it even for medicines, sweets, toothpastes or vitamins and minerals.
If your baby is already on a mixed solids and milk diet, and is reacting to the solids, you can start weaning from scratch using the same protocol. Stop the baby’s existing solid foods and start from the beginning with single-food testing as outlined.
If your child is already a wilful toddler with an established diet and preferences. When you introduce a food (or drink) to a baby for the first time, it helps to introduce it by itself, so that you can tell as clearly as possible how the baby tolerates it. The best way to do this (whether you are just starting a baby on solids for the first time, or whether you are trying to sort out a diet for a baby already on solids) is to give the chosen food by itself as one meal of the day and preferably as the only food of the day.
