ALLERGY TO CLEANING PRODUCTS/CHEMICALS AT WORK OR SCHOOL: AIR FRESHENERS

Your reactions may be caused by cleaning products used at your workplace or school. You could ask the management or people responsible for the cleaning to use products which you tolerate better. If necessary, give them a packet or bottle to try.

Air Fresheners

Do not use solid or spray air fresheners. Some contain chemicals such as limonene (a synthetic lemon scent) to perfume the air; others contain chemicals which block and mask odours. The chemicals are usually complex hydrocarbons and can cause sensitivity. Toilet freshener blocks often contain paradichlorobenzene, which is a troublesome chlorinated hydrocarbon.

Air fresheners really are not necessary. Keep rooms well ventilated and open windows to remove unpleasant odours fast. If you want to remove or kill smells, see Deodorisers below.

If you like natural perfumes and are not sensitive to plant terpenes, try using pot pourri, dried herbs or lavender bags as air fresheners.
