AVOIDING ED AS A SIDE EFFECT: CONSTANTLY BEING ALERT TO NEWER TREATMENT OPTIONS
Every year, new drugs with greater ability to overcome disease are introduced. With their use, the way that physicians treat an ailment can change. This was the case with migraine headache, a condition that has been treated with beta-blockers, calcium channel blockers, and antidepressants. While certainly effective on migraine, these drugs are associated with ED. Patrick, who had suffered from excruciating headaches since he was twenty-eight, responded well to Procardia, a calcium channel blocker. Sometimes a low dose of Elavil, an antidepressant, was added.
But despite the relief they gave him, Patrick wasn’t happy with this drug regimen because it gave him another headache: erection problems. The recent introduction of Imitrex (sumatriptan), a very effective drug that could stop a migraine headache within a matter of minutes, became an option. This drug is used on an as-needed basis; as soon as symptoms begin the patient takes it.
While Patrick still experiences migraines from time to time, to his great relief the Imitrex knocked out the pain within half an hour. No longer dependent on prophylactic treatment, he had a spontaneous return of his erections and hasn’t had a problem since.
