BACK PAIN

We must look after our backs. Back pain or injury can be caused by just picking up a tissue. We must remember that the head weighs about 7 kilograms and this puts a tremendous strain on the lower back when bending over and not bending the knees. It is very important to lift things correctly. Squatting down is always the answer no matter what you are picking up. It is also important to hold the object being lifted and carried close to the body.

Back injuries and back pain contribute to massive absenteeism in the Australian workforce. Back damage can be caused from gardening, normal household duties or heavy lifting. The pain can be excruciating and can affect our everyday life. Back pain can be caused by strained muscles, damage to one or more of the discs, and pressure on a nerve.

If you have back pain there are many things that can help. Taking analgesics only masks the symptoms and relieves the pain but does not solve the problem. Prevention is better than cure. If the back problem is muscular then the herb valerian can help relax the muscles and reduce the pain. A celery complex containing celery seeds, an anti-rheumatic herb, and Guaiacum, a herb that has anti-inflammatory and anti-rheumatic qualities, are very beneficial. These herbs help reduce inflammation and acid buildup in the area, quickly helping the return of movement without pain.

Salves containing wintergreen oil can help during the acute stage as well as a supplement with white willow bark. (This has similar properties to aspirin as mentioned previously under Analgesics.)
