EARLY AND ACCURATE DIAGNOSIS ESSENTIAL
Prompt diagnosis of STD is important. These diseases can have serious implications for the patient and the patient’s sexual contacts. Many can
be effectively treated. STDs have variable manifestations including not only genitourinary symptoms and signs but also extragenital lesions or systemic illness. The diagnosis of STD depends on a detailed history, careful clinical examination and specific investigations. If a patient is found to have an STD, the possibility of coexisting STDs should be considered.
Syphilis was described as the great mimicker, it has been joined by AIDS which presents in many guises. Practitioners must always be alert to the possibility of sexually transmitted disease.
It is important to obtain laboratory confirmation before attributing symptoms to STD. Some patients presenting with symptoms suggestive of STD have no objective evidence of organic disease.
