IMPOTENCE: PENILE SHOTS

A new method to test for erection may sound unappealing. And that’s completely understandable. What man wants a shot in his penis? Well, rest assured that the needle used is very small—less than an inch long—and that the patients who’ve had the shot report that it causes only minor pain which goes away when the needle is removed.

It may seem surprising that a shot in the penis can produce an erection, and this is indeed a new diagnostic and treatment method. Because it is so new, many specialists may not know much about it and may not have much experience with it. It works because the drugs that are injected increase the blood flow into the penis, causing an erection.

This method often provides valuable diagnostic clues, since if a man can get an erection from the shot, it’s a good indication that his arteries and veins are working well. A poor erection can mean arterial blockage, leaky veins or just a nervous reaction that causes the arteries to constrict. Because the drugs used mimic the action of the nerves, patients with nerve damage may still get erections from these shots, even though they are physically damaged.
