MAKING LOVE: MAN’S EXPERIENCE

Once a man has ejaculated his interest in sex, and possibly his partner, declines rapidly. His penis will shrink and his sex drive diminishes. For a period of time, depending mainly on his age and health, he can’t achieve another erection and so his interest in sex is reduced.

For many men, the penis becomes exquisitely sensitive immediately after orgasm, necessitating instant withdrawal from the vagina. Such men will often withdraw physically from their partners, moving and turning away from them.

In addition, many men are frequently overcome by post-coital somnolence. During the arousal period, a substantial amount of blood flows into the man’s pelvic area, and his muscles contract and tighten. This blood is rapidly diverted away from the area after sex, and his muscles relax so that the excitement is replaced by drowsiness and a general feeling of lethargy – something not experienced by the majority of women. A man will often roll over to his side of the bed and go to sleep, leaving his partner in the “damp spot”.

Accommodating a partner Most men are totally unaware of how a woman interprets these movements, since she experiences very different feelings after orgasm.

Even if a man is not able to combat his physiological reactions to orgasm, he can and should be sensitive to his partner’s emotional needs. A last cuddle and goodnight kiss can be bestowed before he drifts off without too much effort, and it will make all the difference to the woman. A change to lovemaking during the morning, when both partners are fresher, or during the day, may help to stave off sleep.
