If the results with human subjects turn out to be the same as with laboratory rats, yohimbine may prove to be beneficial for men with low sexual desire and chronic testosterone deficiency. Researchers at Stanford University divided rats into two groups: The unfortunate ones got nothing, while the others received yohimbine. Twenty minutes after the shots, the yohimbine-treated rats were engaged in the rodent version of an orgy, exhibiting twice the sexual behavior of the rats who didn’t get yohimbine.

The success with the rats could be due in part to their large dose and the fact that the yohimbine was injected. Humans are given smaller doses in a pill form that isn’t as easily absorbed as the injections.

The best advice is to look upon yohimbine as something of a long shot. Discuss your options in detail with your physician, and remember that other treatments, like penile implants and shots, are available.

It may seem surprising that a shot in the penis can produce an erection, and this is indeed a new diagnostic and treatment method. Because it is so new, many specialists may not know much about it and may not have much experience with it. It works because the drugs that are injected increase the blood flow into the penis, causing an erection.

This method often provides valuable diagnostic clues, since if a man can get an erection from the shot, it’s a good indication that his arteries and veins are working well. A poor erection can mean arterial blockage, leaky veins or just a nervous reaction that causes the arteries to constrict. Back Problems

Back problems can cause erection difficulties. If a disc between the vertebrae slips and compresses the nerves coming out of the spinal cord, the pressure on the nerves can short-circuit the process necessary for erection.
